2020. As we look back on the past 6 months, it’s clear to see the many injustices in this world. We lost role models and artists. We lost countless innocent civilians and black lives. We ignored our planet as it began to heat up and failed Australia as the wildfires destroyed their ecosystems. We watched as the world faced an unprecedented pandemic and in response we locked our countries down. “2020 is cancelled”, everyone said. But as the world came to a gradual halt, and people gained more time to focus, we started to wake up. We started to educate ourselves on the bigger issues burdening our world. We started to listen when David Attenborough told us “if we act now we can yet put it right”. We started to pay attention when we saw how the world had failed Yemen. We started to protest at the senseless killing of yet another black human being. And another black human being. And another black human being… And yet we still have more work to do. We still need justice for Breonna Taylor. We still need justice for Belly Mujinga. We still need justice for Elijah McClain. Shukri Yahya Abdi. Kendrick Johnson. And many more. During this lockdown, we have learnt more about our planet and the world we live in than ever before. We have opened our eyes to a world that needs change. 2020 isn’t cancelled, but rather the most important year of them all.
